hi there,

just got my vag com software.on my 2002 vw passat tdi 130 sport.

did the diagnostics and got this fault code under the engine controller.

"17964- Charge pressure control -negative deviation
P1556 - 35 - 00"

I've had a look at the wiki but its not very specific.

could anybody shed some light on the likely cause of this.

I've noticed a small drop oil falling from the intercooler pipes down by the anti-roll bar - would this be causing it?

Is this a common fault on passat tdi's?

any help greatly appreciated.

thanks
conor

17964/P1556 - Charge Pressure Control: Negative Deviation
Possible Symptoms
Reduced power output
Limp mode
Possible Causes
Boost Pressure too Low
Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected or leaking
Charger Pressure Control defective
VNT (variable nozzle turbo): nozzles stuck
Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75) defective
Possible Solutions
Check Hoses/Pipes to/between Components
Check Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75)
Check / Clean / Replace Charge Pressure Control
Check / Clean mechanism for variable nozzles

Check the (what VW refer to as an intercooler pipe), usually one end goes to the EGR, the other goes towards some sort of sensor. Its a fairly fat pipe, cost nearly £50!

That is an under boost error, usually a split or worn through vacuum hose. Remove the small diameter vacuum hose from the servo feed pipe (carefully, it can snap off) and suck on it. If you can suck air, there is a leak. This is often the thin plastic pipe has rubbed through where it goes into the EGR control solenoid (buried over on the left hand side of the engine under the expansion bottle and intercooler ducting) or where the pipe goes in the opposite direction over the air cleaner down to the N75 valve, where it often wears through on a steel clip on the side of the air box.

Paul b: When you say its a fat pipe is that the one that is down low by the passenger wheel arch that i saw the oil drops on?

Crasher: When you say remove the small diameter vacuum hose from the servo feed pipe - what do you mean by servo feed pipe - what servo is it feeding?

Forgive my rather limited mechanical knowledge but i'm willing to give anything a try within reason.

thanks for all the replies guys - very much appreciated.
