I am thinking of replacing my 1999 A6 Tdi with either a Passat 1.9 TDI Estate (2006) or a 1.9 Tdi A4 Avant (2005). I drive approximately 100 miles a day and want a car that will eat the miles and last as well as being a decent tow car for a horse trailer. Any views on the cars and their reliability.

Many thanks

They are pretty much the same. Same running gear etc, you can have the same problems with either of them.

It just comes down to finding the best one, low mileage, good condition, good price etc.

They will both eat the miles. Usually the Passats come with a bit more kit as standard, but some people say if you've owned an A6 you would never want a Passat...

Thanks for the response.

Should I also be considering the 2.0tdi engine or does it have reliability issues?

I've never driven a 2.0 TDI, but its definitely quieter than the 1.9 TDI (which doesn't exactly sound like a tractor to start with). They are about as economical as each other (assuming you're talking about the 140bhp TDI, the 170bhp versions struggle to do 40mpg).

The PD130 1.9 TDIs have been raved about by many on this forum, they seem very reliable (touch wood ;)).
