Good morning all.

After struggling to start the car these last few days, I had to jump start yesterday morning to get going :( . I checked the battery and found the 'magic eye' to be clear. The manual suggests topping up the electrolyte or fitting a replacement if the battery is older than five years. As I only bought the car this October I've no idea how old the battery is so I'd appreciate if someone could advise on the best replacement.

Many thanks in advance.

Antony.

h i , have the same year and model as you and had the same problem, took it to my mate who is the manager of etb so know he would'nt rip me of. previous owner had put a smaller battery in which did'nt help so was recommended a platinum, part no 110, 12v,cca sae 780 amps,ah(20h) 75 amps. if thats any help to ya.a bit pricey at about 70 squid but worth it.

Thanks for the reply swanny1.

I've since read that the original batteries fitted were 280/480A 60Ah in a group 47 footprint (246l x 175w x 190h). One chap suggested fitting a group 48 (306l x 175w x 192h), which, although 60mm longer he assures would fit. These types can give a CCA similar to yours at around 700.
It perhaps begs the question, were the OEM batteries ever man enough for the job?

Any other recommendations/suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

Antony

I'd gor for a Bosch Silver battery from Euro Car Parts, they come in at about half what the dealers charge and being Bosch you know they're up to oe quality. ;)

You mentioned Bosch Silver euroslap - should the cranking current be around 700 or should the 480 units suffice?

No idea what the current draw is on starting. I fitted one to my father's 1.8T S3 a few months back and it's started perfectly every time since so I know they're up to the task. ;)

Eventually sourced a Bosch Silver S4004 (60Ah with a CCA of 540A) with a 3 year warranty for £54 from Normans Motor Shop at S75 6BS. At 175mm high the terminal posts are just high enough to allow the terminal clamps to be tightened sufficiently.

Now I can get back to some serious motoring :D.
