a4 heater problem

hi there, first timer so be gentle. audi a4 2001 1.8t ,heater blows hot when driving but cools down when at tickover. stat seems ok as engine comes up to temp normal. new water pump fitted last year,flaps and blower seem to be ok, plenty of air just not hot untill car is moving. help its ruddy cold! any ideas much appreciated.

Possibly the heater matrix is partially blocked. If the chassis number contains 8D (wauzzz8?xxxxxxxx), it is a nightmare to change, if it is 8E it is very easy. A 2001 could be either.

sales model is 8E2 so hopefully, will give that a try first. thanks for your help.

The matrix is £125 and takes about an hour and a half to do.
