polo fast idle

My son has just bought a 1998 polo 1 litre .The engine has cut out on a number of occasions and developed a fast idle (2,000 rpm). A mechanic says it is the throttle body and this needs replacing. Does this sound right and is it a simple job?

Try cleaning the TB first, there are loads of posts on here how to.
Then try a throttle body alignment with Vagcom.
