Hello all, I'm new to this site. I have an 01 plate 1.9 Diesel Passat 130PD TDI with which I have been delighted.
About 3 weeks ago I was driving it and it suddenly lost all power. I subsequently heard a fluctuating (revs related) whine from the engine , which stayed, and a momentary tinkling sound. Sometimes it drives like it should only to drop it's power when under load, say up a hill, just as though a switch has been thrown. Other times it drives very sluggishly. Seems better when engine is cold. Turbo boost does not seem to cut in until 2500+ revs and goes out at 3500. I, in desperation, took it to the VW Main Dealer for a diagnostic check. They reported that there were two faults, a temperature sensor which I had them replace, cost £86.00, and a faulty turbocharger cost £1551.00 which I did not have them replace. I have subsequently had the Turbo removed, rebuilt by a Midlands Turbo specialist and reinstalled by a local engine specialist for a total cost of £375.00 including an oil and cam belt change. The fault however is still there although the engine whine has now disappeared, which was possibly due to the shot bearings, now replaced, in the Turbo. Elsewhere on this forum are posts describing similar symptons. I am a pensioner and cannot afford to just keeping on bolting on expensive bits as trial and error which seems to be how VW dealers operate. I can't understand why the fault hasn't shown on the diagnostic check if it is a sensor, valve etc. I have no way of checking any electronic circuitry fault codes and am in the hands of a Main Dealer I no longer trust. In doing the diagnosis and sensor replacement they left out a bolt on the Turbo which I had to point out and have them replace. I have no confidence in them to find or rectify anything.
Any ideas or suggestions for things I could do in tracing this fault (I've worked on my own cars for 40 years or more and am quite experienced) would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Has some faults that would relate to a maff sensor, I hope CRASHER comes by and gives his opinion he really does know his stuff.

Have you looked in the vagcom subforum for someone local to you who might be able to help by scanning the car for faults ?

Now have closure on this loss of power. The garage who did the turbo work directed me to a local tuning company with sophisticated diagnostic gear and rolling road. Within 30 mins they had diagnosed a failed MAP sensor on the manifold which detects manifold pressure and informs ECU. Fault now cleared and car goes like a good 'en.
Not impressed with VW franchised garage diagnostics who failed to spot this fault. Am not totally convinced my turbo was shot either but I will never know.
Thanks everyone for your help and interest.
