Air conditioning issue

I have a 1998 S4 and noticed yesterday that the air conditioning symbol was not showing on the climate control display. The symbol appears when I press and hold down the air conditioning button on the dash board but disappears when I release the button.

Any ideas anyone?

You have a B5.
get the system pressure checked, it might need a regas.
