VW Sharan SE Auto intermittent starting problem

Wondering if anyone can help - we have an S reg VW Sharan auto SE. It has cut out a number of times recently for no reason, as I have been driving along. This week it was turning over but would not fire into action. Today (after not working for 5 days) it started first time!!! :zx11: It was however coughing as we took it round the block. Not only am I getting fed up but hubby is threatening to ditch it for a new car.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

It has recently had a full service and cam belt change.

Any suggestions what to try first - after spending £970 on it recently am loathed to waste more money.
