coilovers

hi looking for some coilovers for s3, they vary from make to make with the price obviously, but also some can only be altered on the front and not the rear, what's that all about? i have been looking at getting some Gmax ones anyone got any fitted and can give advice? these are going to be for a christmas and birthday present for my son so cant spend a fortune im afraid due to lack of funds!!
