Hi!

Can anyone shed any light on these cars?

I`m starting to look for a second car(5dr) thats cheap to run and look after?

I`m hooked by VW`s because of my Passat and am wondering if its a wise used buy?

Cars that seem reasonable start at 700 and go to 1400 quid?
I`m after a 1.4 cl 5dr in any colour other that white>?

So far I`ve found that they can rust in rear arches and to check for water leaks on the carpets....

Any tips greatfully received.

MPG, common faults etc etc.

Thanks
Mark

hey buddy, proud polo owner! I have a mk4 1996 GLX, rare model and I love it! Plenty of torque and imo better than any hatchback in its era!

anyway common faults:

lumpy idle caused by dirty throttle body, easy fix. £50 should sort it
they are infamous for weak gearboxes! check for whirring noises and difficult changes
- electric window motors are weak and this is a very common fault

besides these things look for full service history and you should be fine. from a 1.4 your looking at about 28 - 30 mpg. Oh and they are not keen on supermarket fuel,

they have expensive taste, BP or Shell!!

besides that happy Polo'ing!

Cheers for the reply Luke!

I`ve heard about the window faults, but I`ll make sure to check out noisy gearbox.

I thought it might be better on fuel, I suppose its how you drive it that make a big difference?

I have been in two mind whether or not to modify the Polo when I get it...

I was pondering putting ATS Cup alloys (15")or Ronal Turbos and lowering it to give it a nice stance...

Or just keep it perfectly stock and totally immaculate... ie no rusty steel wheels etc...

Not sure what to do yet...

I`m 36 and am thinking I may be too old to mod a car in that particulr way?

Decisions decisions.

yeah the polo can be pretty thirsty if driven hard like mine. on some tanks its easy to drop to 23 25 mpg!

if your lookin to mod you cant go wrong with OEM ++

nice 40 50mm drop
K&N induction
BBS solitudes
maybe some 16v tail lights??

cant go wrong really!

check out clubpolo.co.uk for some insiration. great lookin polos on there.
