tdi engines have a "conventional" injector pump feeding the injectors.
the pd engines have "individual injector units/pumps,the injection being operated by the camshaft, and the amount of fuel by injector solenoids on each individual unit.
no idea about model changes though.

The octavia 1 is based on the golf 4. The octavia 2 (2005 on) is based on the golf 5 and a totally different car. Both are good and a little different.

Without going into the technical nuts and bolts, the pd in the octavia 1 was 130hp, vs the tdi's 90 and 110hp (SLX, L&K and Elegance were 110hp, 130pd option later on Ele/L&K only if I remember).

The pre-pd tdi is more durable engine wise, less heads and turbos go. BUT, more minor faults/sensors/maf etc. The PD uses more fuel but has more power. The tdi uses less fuel, even when you compare say a pd100 to a tdi110 the tdi can be up to 10mpg better.

If you drive little or don't care about mpg and have a big budget go for a pd130, with the 6 speed box a very swift motor.

Otherwise go for the very competent & more econmic 110tdi.
