s3 wuurring noise from rear of car

Got this noise on my s3 it starts at about 40mph and is a wuurring noise that sounds like its coming from the rear of the car.Does anyone know what it could be? seems to go away when the car is under load. Its a 2000 s3.Thanks

Chances are the rear differential is whinning, when was the last time the rear axle oil was changed?

Checked wheel bearings its not those.The diff has oil in as opened the drain plug and some came out.Not sure when it was last changed altho looks clean.Is it worth changing it? if so do you know what type i should use and how much? thanks

im pretty sure its 85w90 and ther should be a drain bung on the bottom of the diff and a fill bung half way up the diff keep filling it untill the oil is runnin out the fill bung
