Converting to electronic ignition is easy, you need the dizzy, coil, engine harness and ignition amplifier from a post 82 Cabrio or Scirocco with an EX engine. If the engine is from a Golf 2 and is a 1.8, it will be a GU engine and this is stamped on the block on a flat just below the head in front of cylinder 3. Don't assume it is a 1.8 just because that is cast into the head, the 1.6 used the same head and block as the 1.8 and even bore diameter so the only definitive way to tell the capacity is to measure the stroke which is best done with the head off.

XRF??? No such code. The area is a small flat machined area just blow number 3 plug but on the block, just under the head gasket. PM me your reg number

Yes, you are right, I can’t do southern Ireland, sorry. It is an 82 chassis and built during November 1981 so should be one of the older 1588cc 1.6 engines, the Driver engine will be a 1595cc or even 1781cc. The original engine code may have been FR.

Could be an RF, it was a 72PS version of the usual 1.6 Driver engine, the EZ, and had a catalyst.
