when your heater has failed to start 5 or more times it has an auto cut off to stop the heater from tring to start again, untill it is cleared.

I have same problem, found this great set of instructions for changing the glow plug, including details of how it's wired:

One question though- for testing, can I short out the temp sensor at the wiper to turn it on? (provided it's been reset of course..)

Andy.

Hi If it is an Eberspacher, they have their own diagnostic tool.

http://www.eberspacher.com/dealers/ The diganostic tool is fairly expensive, for maybe a one time use only.It would maybe pay you to have a diagnose read ,in a VW commercial workshop. The tool works something similar to vag com,it is connected in serie with the heater, and shows the faults in various codes.
