Finally got round to removing the box this weekend and found the problem.
I'd like to give a thank to Crasher who's diagnosis of a broken release arm was absolutely spot on. Got one ordered this morning which was luckily less than I'd expected at £13 plus Vodka and Tonic from VW. New clutch is being fitted, then box back on during the week and hopefully jobs a guddun! :D
