brake fault

Having a problen with my brakes, if I apply foot brake several times in a short period going down hill for example. the foot pedel goes very hard and its difficuct to stop the car. Any ideas what the problem is. thanks

Loss of servo assistance, (assuming your engine is running).
Check the vacuum hoses for leaks, holes splits etc...
Check the one way valve in the vacuum pipes.
If they are OK, suspect the brake servo has failed, maybe to do with water ingress and corrosion (see other threads).

Thanks for the advice will check the pipe for splits or leaks, My car has done 215,000miles so may need a new brake servo. Is this a big job for a Diyer or is it best left to a prosessional?
