EGR Valve (N18) Electrical Malfunction

my car a volkswaagen golf MK5, 2.0 fsi, 150 bhp, 54 registration threw up a few code on VAg-com. am lost. any ideas wat the problem may be?

EGR Valve (N18) - Electrical Valve Malfunction
P1400 - 001 - Upper limit Exceeded

and how can one rectify this without having to pay the dealer. thanks in advance

give the egr valve a good clean with carb cleaner and a wire brush clear the fault codes and recheck in a couple of days
