95 Vento GL making strange humming

Hi, i have recently bought a 95' VW Vento GL, and up until 2 days ago it was fine, until now. It makes a loud humming/buzzing noise when i accellerate (particuallary from 1000rpm to 3000rpm) for the first 2 gears, and then dies down when i hit 3rd gear.... Im not sure what im dealing with because it changes gears good, anyone know what it is???? :(

I had this problem before on a golf diesel. It turned out to be the inlet to the air filter box, I just cut it off!!! Problem solved. No effect to the overall running of the car.
