Trying to replace the gearbox in my 1990 Passat Petrol. I have tried every which way but cannot seem to make enough space for it to drop out. I have removed the left hand drive shaft to give more space to move the gearbox but it always ends up hanging on the right diff-transmission flange. Looks to me as though the gearbox cannot pull straight back but must be twisted somehow. Any ideas?

i aint exactly a front wheel drive specialist, but what you might need to do is completely remove the engine and gearbox mounts (whilst on a hoist) and try to move the engine and gearbox accordingly being careful not to damage the exhaust.

I still have the scars on the back of my left hand from the first one of those I did, it slid back and trapped my hand against the inner wing and sliced open the top of three of my fingers on the sharp folded in lower edge. You pull the box back and then rotate it so the diff is up at about 45 degrees and then roll the box out. The engine has to be dropped down at an angle and I take both shafts out.

Thanks for that Crasher - just to let you know it worked, but I had the gearbox out a second time before Christmas (don't ask why!) and this time decided to tap out the offside drive shaft flange. It just needs a long piece of wood and a sharp thump with the hammer - and then the gearbox drops out easily because the drive shaft flange no longer hangs up on the bellhousing.
Mind you hopefully I won't be doing it ever again...
