Mk 2 Golf Engine noise

Hi, Ive just found this forum so here goes!

My Golf 2 8v GT1 (1991) has developed a worrying noise that sounds like its coming from the engine itself. it sounds like a bit like the noise of a washing machine drum turning (not on spin) with a regular 'beat'. It can easily be heard inside or outside the car. I have now realised the car was very low on oil -, ive put 2 litres in to get to the max mark and I'm hoping its not related - ive ran low before a few times with no ill effects. The engine has done 150K miles

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Hi

This is not the alternator, power steering pump (if fitted) or a belt making a noise? I has somthing that sounded similar, sprayed the above with WD40 and it stopped.

Another thing, when was the timing belt and tensioner changed last? could be the tensioner bearing making a noise.
