Dear All, I bought an Audi A4 2.5TDI Quattro sport 180BHP! It's an amazing car, but I never had a diesel car and there is a noise coming from the engine while on mid revs that sounds like a siren or a whistle. It is very quiet but I can still hear it and since it is a second hand car I'm a bit worried. Is this normal, as some friends are telling me that it is normal for a TDI?

In pretty much all turbo diesels you will hear an increasing whistle as you accelerate(as the turbocharger spools up to speed) and then a continuous high pitched whistle once its fully on boost.

It sounds like what you are hearing is normal, but if in doubt, ask a mech minded person or even a tech (audi techs are very accomodating if you ask nicely, in my experience!) If not normal, it could simply be a loose hose.

HTH;)

Many Thanks, SEMKY. youdefinitely brought some relief for me as I already started worrying that I bought a broken car which would costs me thousands to fix. Otherwise it drives perfect with its 180 bhp.

No problem, bet it feels pretty lively!
Like I said without hearing it its difficult to say definitively that its all pucka....if you have any doubts, drop into a local specialist or dealer and ask a tech (not sales) to listen.....they have been very helpful for me with mine in the past!

I think it's normal mate. I like the whistle the TDI's put out, makes it sound full of power and it's definitely a lot more noticeable than any other turbo car I've been in.

I wouldn't worry, but like Semky says, go and get it listened to by a Tech, and not a salesman, otherwise they will just tell you flat theirs something wrong and replace something that doesn't need fixing.

Sounds to me like it's just the normal sounds though! :)
