windscreen wipers

has anyone got any ideas what might be wrong with my wipers

they wont stop going and when they do they stay in a strange parked position

on intermittent they are on constantly and on the sweep they go for about ten cycles

any help much appreciated

was thinking of changing the relay is this a good place to start?

I had similar symptoms on my Mk1golf which was due to water ingress into the relay.
It was swimming when I took it apart. Worked fine again after drying and application of sealing wax to prevent recurrence.

Have not had any issue on the passat and the relay is in a less vulnerable location anyway. Try swpiing with someone elses first in case it is something else
