There is a procedure that works on pre 2001 audi/vag cars using the dash needles but you need to be a bit more specific about model and engine(petrol or diesel) ! Give us a bit more details and we may be able to help. Cheers.

Specifically it is a 1996 A4 Quatro 2.6.
