When was the 2.0 litre FSI petrol engine first available on the A4 Avant? Is it significantly better than the 1.8SE? What does FSI stand for? Is it a variable valve arrangement like the Toyota VVTI (variable valve timing ignition!).

Hi Tom the 2.0 FSI was first put in the A4 on 2002 models.

FSI stands for Fuel Stratified Injection which basically means the petrol is injected into the combustion chamber of each cylinder under very high pressure.

Not having driven one I can't say what it is like but I have heard it is not as good as it should be and therefore I would recommend the 1.8T which is tried and tested in a lot of VAG cars.
