Smoking diesel engine!!

[audi 80 tdi]

hello, I am new to the site even though i am on my 8th audi 80!!
I have just bought a TDI, which although it is imaculate, I have noticed one small problem. On setting off it smokes like mad in first and partially in second, all other gears are fine and performance is spot on if a little flat in the gears when it smokes, there are no obvious oil leaks and it has a good history. Just wondered if anyone knew what it could be?? I have a feeling it is stem seals, piston rings or the turbo, but before i start dismanting the engine just wondered if there was another explaination. Any help would be appriciated

have you checked th ebig pipe from the inlet to the turbo?

mine was split and it smoked like buggery :)
