My timing belt tensioner failed. Have renewed with belt. valves and pistons still intact! However can't start, engine turning good spark. Have Haynes however cant identify injection system! Any suggestions?

When the belt tensioner failed did the valve timing slip ?
Have you confirmed that the sparks are occurring at the correct time ? I think that this would be the place to start if the valve timing slipped.

Also, can you smell unburnt fuel ?

Thanks, I guess the distributor timing could be 180' out I will investigate. Plenty of unburnt fuel smell

check the balance shaft is correctly timed

Balance shaft? Intermediate shaft. Have you done a compression test? How do you know the valves have not been hit?
