I have a friends W plate Polo 1.0 outside now and im trying to work out why the heater is only blowing cold air. All pipes are hot,ive run the engine with the cap off the tank and there are no air locks !

Any ideas ??

water pump impellor falls of the water pump so it doesnt circulate coolant properley.

Eventhough the car is running at normal temp and all pipes are hot etc ??

Does this still sound like a failed water pump ?

I've done one of these were the impellor had fallen off but was still runnig ok no overheating just no hot air its worth a look. M

Sounds like it needs replacing then. The car only has 32,000 miles on it !! I will replace the cambelt aswell, should anything else be changed at the same time ?

Hi its a good idea to do the adjuster and guide rollers if your doing the belt.M

Ok,will do all that at the same time. Out of interest, how much would this job cost for the main dealer to do ?

i work at a vw retailer this is a common problem with polo water pumps, also sometimes the thermostat comes through the plastic housing aswell inside, this is worth a look aswell,if going to replace cambelt make sure you replace cambelt tensioner as sometimes they dont tension up properley.

I'd guess at around £300 all in.

Same problem on my N plate 1.4 Will give it a try as the (shivering) Missus has thrown a wobbler this morning :(

Well - just spent an afternoon scouring e-bay & the local scrappers to no joy re an impellor on its own.

Halfords were their usual rip off, unhelpful selves - turned out to be cheaper @ my local VW dealers for the pump, belt & tensioner : just under 90 quid for the lot... I'll keep you posted !
