was thinking of fitting towbar to my golf estate but not keen on having the bumper cut, are there any makes of towbar which would avoid this,

On a mkv you will definately need to cut a hole in it for any make of towbar. You can however buy the bottom valence from VW for about £50 with a designated 'flap' in it. If you opt for a removable towbar then it really is a clean job and well worth the extra £'s imho. You won't see anything when the tow bar is not connected and will probably not affect resale value of your car.
