Radio replacement to Double Din

Hi all , can anyone tell me is it possible to replace my OEM stereo to a new double din one I have a 2001 A4 TDI se . The problem being is there enought room to fit such a unit as the heater controls seem to be slightly bigger than the standard din size see the attached photo. I was thinking of dropping the heater controls down to the next level then trying to fit the Double Din unit in the opening, is that posssible ?
