1995 caravelle 2.4 diesel help required

Hi,
Am new to this forum so dunno if i posted in correct place for this question.
i have a 1995 2.4 d manuall VW Caravelle.

Question:

my fuel gague and water temp gague do not work 'correctly' and sometimes not at all.
To get it to work ( which then mostly gives an incorrect reading) you have to bang the top of the dash.
am told its a little chip in behind the gagues (dioid or somethin) that doesnt make contact or has a loose connection.

Can anyone confirm this or tell me a little about it and whats required to fix???
(in the hope of avoiding a mechanic having to remove to check)

Hi Gav,

That is common problem on all cars not just yours.

Basically its an issue with the earth and the connections. Take them out and give them a clean - use a bit of sand paper on the contacts to remove any residue. Job done.
