They will fit but they may be the wrong weight group. What are the colours of the paint marks on your springs (e.g. 1 silver, 1 green) and the paint marks on the new springs? I can see why you are having problems though, the genuine parts are now obsolete for a 1990 with the SB engine, they would have been 893 411 105 C (1 silver, 1 green).

many thanks for your reply, the colours on the new springs are yellow and orange.the part no.is 8AO-411-105AB.I dont mind if the ride is more firm as Im 68 y.o.and not a boy racer any more, well not for a long, long time.
I was told these springs were for a quatro with a v6 engine. would they still fit mine.again many thanks for your prompt reply.

8A0 411 105 AB (8A0 not 8AO) has 2 yellow and 3 orange paint marks and is for a car with a significantly heavier engine than your car. The effect will not be to just increase the ride harshness but may also make the front end higher by as much as 20-mm which will not only look stupid but will also make the car handle in a very peculiar manner.

many thanks for the information,I can see that it may well affect the behaviour of the car especially at speed and/or windy conditions.
Do you have any suggestions as to which set of springs would do as replacements for my originals.
thank you very much for your assistance,

I would think that they are available from an alternative source but I have had terrible problems with aftermarket springs and I always push for people to use genuine parts but in your case that isn't possible so I would look to someone like GSF to see if they can help.
