Came down to my car this morning to find some little so and so`s have ripped out my door lock and stolen my stereo from my beloved Mk3 Golf, looks like they tried to have a go at ignition barrel as well but failed.

Just wondering if you guys reckon it will be easier to replace the door myself and stereo (the one in it wasnt anything fancy just a cd player) Just thought it might be easier than involving the insurance company.

Just pray that these little gits die a horribly slow painful death!:zx11:

Ouch! Wouldn't you just love to catch the buggers who did this.

Personally I would arrange to have it fixed myself, it will be cheaper in the long run. Some years ago I had a similar situation with my mk3 gti, when someone smashed the side window, damaged the paintwork in the process, and ripped the stereo out. It cost a bit to have it all put right, but not enough to make it worth my while going through the insurance.

I dont mind loosing the stereo as it wasnt very good anyway its the hassle of now having to sort everything out, before last night I have never had any of my cars broken into so I suppose I have been quite lucky really.

Just gutted about my door and the fact some little asbo scally has been sat in my car!

Scum.

Really feel for you.

As for getting hold of them, sadly they probably have more rights than you do as the victim. The law should be behind the victims.

Obviously, i cant tell the full extent of damage to your golf, however i do remember this being a particular problem with the mk2 GTi's, when the scumbags come calling.

however, you might find that buying one of these plates, and a new door handle will cure your problem (maybe buy 2 and protect the other side as well?)

I know on the MK2, with one of these plates a new handle could be fitted over the panel damage with little or no sign of the damage being inflicted, with the bonus of saving you getting another door + plus the painting etc.

Good luck with sorting it, and i'm sorry to hear about this, its gut wrenching to find your motor interfered with by these scum bags

What do the plates look like? + Where do they go?
Cheers

Have ordered a second hand handle with key off ebay and have just ordered one of the plates as well, hopefully should be able to bend some of the metal back into place and get the plate over it. Ill post up some pictures of how it ends up looking.

Just out of interest they were nice enough to leave the key barrel on the floor, is it a difficult job to get the barrel out to put into the new handle?

Nice to hear your on the right track :fing02:

If the barrel isn't damaged, you should be able to withdraw it with your key,

I'm sure there is a pin that needs to be pressed to release the barrel. from the handle, but I'd wait until your ready to insert it into your new handle, because if the key is the same as the ignition key, as once its released, you cannot withdraw the key until its inserted into a handle. (unless you have two ignition keys, lol)

I think this is the mk4, so i'm not sure if it will help as the handle is different

Got my new door handles today so bent out the metal, the little asbo sods certainly did a good job on it, just did a quick job as the security plates havent come yet but even after 3 days im fed up of having to open the door from the passenger side.

Had a bit of trouble getting my lock barrel in the new handle but this was down to plain stupidity in not realising there was a washer stuck in it!! After that mishap everything went quite well.

Door still needs some work as its pretty badly bent but will do this at the weekend when I have more time. Anyway see pictures below of current progress. Some nice tape to cover up the paint for now until i fit the security plates
