I need some diesel in mine, so can get back to you.

DIS says normally about 43-45mpg, but manual calculations average it at 39.5mpg.

This is driving to and from work plus popping out at weekend, urban and part heavy motorway traffic, A4 1.9TDi 130 avant.

But my Honda is doing 75mpg!! :D

1.9 TDI PD 2001 Passat Estate 55k (30% Biodiesel)
Car lifetime - 42 MPG
Record on motorway - 53.2 MPG (steady 70 MPH over 100 miles)
Round the Devon lanes - 30 to 50 (depending on my mood and traffic)
All using trip computer, it's so close to calculated MPG that I stopped bothering.
I have noticed no difference using Biodiesel overall, though it may be giving me more MPG on the motorway, less around town.
I know I could get a lot more MPG, but it would mean driving at different times of the day, or ******* off other drivers. I'm prepared to do neither of these.

Where do you 2 fill up?

I would expect a 10-15% drop with either 4wd or auto box, depends if you use the multitronic in full auto mode.

What miles do you get to a full tank?

skymaster
05-02-2007, 05:42 PM
Yes, as you know Mine is a quattro. Maybe my expectations of the MPG were just too high. I guess with a car that is this heavy, 4 wheel drive and fairly brisk performance it's unreasonable to expect too much fuel economy.

damn you guys get GOOOOOOD gas mileage in the UK. On average I go about 260-300 miles to the tank depending on how I drive. Most i've done on 1 tank is 420 miles, but that was all freeway. With 17 gallon tank that's only about 25mpg

A4 1.9 TDi (90bHp :( ) - currently only about 46mpg - but this is for shortish journeys (10-12miles) in winter - goes up to 50-51 (according to the display - which seems pretty accurate) in summer. Best record was when filled up and reset counters with warm engine and then got stuck in 40mph traffic all the way back from east coast (about 70 miles) - 66mpg average shown on display. Wish I could get that all the time !

Must confess my prime motive for the chip wasnt fuel economy, but most of the chip suppliers do seem to claim "improved fuel economy".

Trouble is, American originated chips, like your APR, arn't particularly known for the "economy" bit. It is generally the European originated chips, such as REVO or Oettinger, which concentrate on enconomy as well as better torque and power!

OK, there is a specific section for the VAG-COM here: http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42, but the info hasn't really gathered their yet.

VAG-COM was initially developed, and is being constantly upgraded by Ross-Tech http://www.ross-tech.com/. It is a full PC emulation copy of the VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda main dealer diagnostic interface, and can be used for fault code reading and clearing, data block measurement using live "on the fly" data capture, systems modules programming and adaptation, and more!

It is available in many languages, and is distributed through a network of official (and some unofficial too) dealers http://www.ross-tech.com/distributors.html.

It really needs to be used on a laptop, as the software is "locked" to one puter.

For a list of individuals who have VAG-COM, use Steve Halls searchable database http://www.steve-hall.com/cgi-bin/VAG-Locator.pl.

Super-loon-hooning it up and down the M40 every day, I get low to mid 30's! I reckon if you drove any petrol like that it'd be in the teens.

One day I drove it really slowly and got low 50's which I was astonished with, not bad for a big old bus.

Remember with the Golf, it never got below 40 no matter how hard it was driven on the same run as I'm doing in the Passat. With a very light foot could get to low 60's on a run.

Just got 52mpg out of my 2001 Avant TDi 115 on a 500 mile run down to Devon and back, which i am very happy with. It was up to 57mpg on the speed camera restricted 50mph stretch of the M42 (which seemed to last for ages). These cars are so econoical taking into account that they are also solidly built. Much better than my 1994 Citroen ZX Volcane TD (40 to 45mpg) even that was made out of bacofoil. Still, it was a fun car with more of a turbo effect and then .... nothing, and only 90bhp.

38 Miles to work (one way) 95% of which is on Motorway.
Always stick to 70mph
Extremely rarely to I go over 2000 revs.
I'm even cruising along in 5th Gear at about 30-35mph without labouring the engine.
Change upto 6th Gear when at 40mph.

On a single journey to work I can quite regularly get 62-65MPG.

Previously I got about 53MPG

This thread seems to have been revived after dozing off for 3 months!
Have enjoyed reading the varied responses - including those off-topic. I didn't see any figures relating to the A4 1.9TDI (110) with a "proper" Auto transmission, so here are the figures for my 1997 model with 125K miles:

I have also included the official Audi mpg from the original brochure:

Audi data [Auto transmission in square brackets]:

Urban Cycle.....47.1 - [36.7]...........my figure is 35
56 mph...........76.3 - [68.9]...........can't say, but never seen anything like this!
75 mph...........56.5 - [51.4]...........my figure is 50

My figures are derived from fuel paid for at pump and odometer miles, as I do not have an on-board display.

my trip computer readings and odometer/fuel gauge calculated readings can be pretty different.
On a trip from glasgow 2 sheffield..256 miles my computer read 50.2 Mpg at the end, from the gauge i reckon i used just under 6 gallons..(abit less then half a tank)
so that makes:

256/5.8 = 43 to 44 mpg.

Anyone else get quite different readings from the Trip comuter / fuel gauge ?

I can't remember now the actual difference between the trip computer and my own recordings, but it was minimal. My 2000MY, 1.9Tdi [110] Manual Avant with 130,000 miles, regularily shows 53 - 54mpg.

I have recently been getting about 43mpg in mixed, mainly local driving. I am considering a remap and wondered if others could say how their mpg figures have changed after having the car chipped? Some people say that the mpg can increase. Is this because the engine has more torque?

97 1.8 turbo petrol
I always put 10 gallons in when i refuel, this helps with the maths.
Miles per tank (before the opening of the barnstaple downstream bridge)= 320
Miles per tank (since the opening of the new bridge, so I now spend 2.5 hours less in traffic a week!) = 360. Fantastic!

Spent the last week as usual doing 1000 miles approx. and this time did a manual calculation, I got almost exactly the same as my trip reading. Reassuring to know I actually get what it tells me.
