I was wondering how the B8 2.0tdi gearbox compares with the old A4 model? I found the first gear very frustrating in the old model :aargh4: Is it still the same?

Much better i think. CAn be a *swear* to get into 1st sometimes, but other than that, no probs. Nice and smooth

I always felt I hand to change into 2nd very soon after taking off in 1st!!! Found 1st gear slow. Is the ratio in the new box the same?

you soon to the top of the rev band in first, but i've found that with all diesel engines of a similar size.

i've only driven a B7 for a couple of days but found that fairly similar from memory

Yeah, someone in another thread made me smile with a comment along the lines of "always having to change gear five times in 300 yards".

Not sure if I'm overdoing it in mine now with keeping revs low, but it seems perfectly happy doing this:

1st up to 7mph
2nd up to 15mph
3rd up to 20mph
4th up to 28mph
5th up to 37mph
6th anything after that

On a flat bit of road with no unnecessary acceleration it'll actually trundle along happily in 6th at 30-32mph.

Only time it seems to get into a flap and I'm changing gear regularly (2 - 3 - 2 - 3) is when you're stuck in stop start around 15-20mph.

Is a lovely gearbox though. And at 6,800 miles I've no longer got any real issues getting into 1st.

How many miles have you done so far?

At the moment mine doesn't like 5th much below 32.

My previous A4 (2005) was OK in 5th at 27-28 which explains why, on the urban driving calculation, I used to get between 42 and 45 mpg.

I'm hoping it's only a matter of time until I get that again.

7,000 miles now. Can't really comment on how it's changing as this is my first diesel and its taken me a little while to adapt.
