Hi there, my 2003 has the same problem.

Mine seems to be temperature related, if i have the heater on quite warm its not as bad, as you go around a corner the dash sort of creaks and makes a slight knock as though its moving.

I have been to see a very good independent VW specialist ( 20 years at a VW dealer ), he rekons that VW have replaced a lot of dashboards in the B5 and 5.5 models due to this problem.

He says that its the air vents underneath the dash, the ones that travel to the slot in the middle and the two round ones at the sides, basically they are bonded to the underside of the dash and they can become slightly loose and therfore creak.

It can be rectified but obviously its time as the dash will have to come out. It could also be that the dash is not clipped in at the top ( under the screen ) properly, has it been out before??, mine has previously been out to repair the air con valve.

Anyway i know its annoying but i just turn the stereo up a bit.

Good luck.

WOAH another caps lock addict. :D

It's probably the mounts. The mounts are metal and the dashboard is plastic so sometimes the two will move against one another and creak. Some mounts are accessible, some are a pain in the *** to get to. A bit of rubber shoved inbetween the metal and plastic usually solves it - or a big THUMP with the fist while driving - which usually lasts about 15 seconds....

YOU SEEM TO BE RIGHT ON THE TEMPERATURE THING BECAUSE AS YOU HAVE SAID THAT IS WHEN IT IS NOISY.
MY CAR STILL HAS 6 MONTHS VW USED CAR WARRANTY ON IT SO I MIGHT GO AND HAVE A WORD WITH THEM.
I ALSO HAVE A FEELING THAT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED ON THIS CAR AS I THINK THE DASH HAS COME OUT BEFORE.

THANKS FOR THE HELP.:biglaugh:

You might like caps lock, but everyone else on every forum in the world hates it. The human eye and brain work by recognising the shape of a word, not the actual letters in it. This means that if you write in caps, people have to read much more slowly to recognise the individual letters.

In short, it's bloody irritating!!!:aargh4:

I would think that if the dash has been out before then its more than likely not been clipped back in properly.

Mine is actually less noisy the warmer it is, which is why i believe its related to the air vents under the dash, that and the fact that my independent has repaired more than he cares to remember and VW actually recognised the problem and started exchanging dash's.

I would test the water with the warranty first, if that fails then it depends how noisey it is, i would suppose a good independent could have the dash in and out in 4-5 hours so probably around the £150-£200 mark.

Good Luck.

PS. I don't mind caps lock, can't see what all the fuss is about.

Regarding the creaking dash
Remove the side panel on the passenger side of the dash, this will expose the upper mounting point. Release the bolt enought to push the dash forward, it helps if an assistant does this for you. Whilst they push the dash forward tighten the bolt.
All this cured mine which was driving me crazy.

I have the same problem with my 2003 tdi passat. There is a knock from the centre of the dash over bumps and round corners. If you swerve from side to side (sensibly of course) there is a knock either way. I think this may be related to the air ducts. Was thinking of pulling the centre vents out and having a drive to get the noise on and then holding the ducts to see if it stops. Has anyone had this fault before? As i say it is a definate knock, not a creak and it is defo dashboard, not suspension etc Its doing me balloon in!!! Cheers Matty

Welcome to the noisy dashboard club!
Sounds just like mine!
Could be passenger airbag mounts??
Could be ducting?
Must get it sorted or will have to sell the car!

^ This may have been missed due to the CAPS bashing of the OP.

Give it a go.

Matty,
I realize this thread is a couple of months old but....YES! I've had my 03 Passat Estate for a month now and for the last few weeks this is exactly the noise I've discovered :( . Only last week did the mechanic at my local garage narrow it down to the top part of the dash. He didn't seem keen to start removing the dash.
Have you had any luck getting it fixed?
Cheers,
Dave

Hi, yes i have. I removed the dashboard (really not as bad as you think) and found the noise to be coming from the two locating clips at the top that hold the dash in place. Basically the clips move against the metal body/cross member. My fix was to remove the clips and paint the underside with grease.

SEE PICS

Two are just the dash removed. The other is the clip. The black clip needs to be removed and greased. The noise is this clip moving on the silver crossmember in the pic. Bloody loud noise from just a clip! Got to sort out my creaky doorcards next!

Cheers MATTY

Nice job, Matty!
Thanks for posting the pics:cool: The first two convinced me not to try this on my own :D ( even if I manage to fix the original problem I usually end up breaking two other things en route) and the third will come in very handy while explaining the problem to the person I manage to rope into helping. Seeing the location of the clips, though, that's exactly where the noise comes from. Seems worse on warmer days too.
Have to agree with you - amazing that so much noise (and that type of noise) can come from just a clip! Glad you got it sorted.
Thanks again,
Dave

I have seen many complaints of dashboard squeak on the USA B5 forum and it seems a problem which VW never admitted. There have been many different suggestions. I have tried them all without long term success.

However, I believe that on my car the biggest noise arose because it seems that the dash is in two parts - an upper and lower and where these meet, I got a squeaking noise especially when the temperature changed - say after 5 minuets on a cold day just when the heater started having a noticeable warming impact.

Therefore, I squirted Silicon Dry Lube along the line where the top and bottom meet and everywhere I thought plastic could rub against plastic. This proved more resilient than WD40 and better than other suggestions like sticking lengths of foam rubber pipe insulation in the gap between the dashboard and the windscreen.

Therefore, the rattle is no longer driving me nuts - but that is probably because I have a loud squeak coming from my Auxiliary Electric Fan, which maks it (my next job).

It only took me about 2 hours to do the whole job. Although i am a tech for BMW and have had plenty of dashboards out in my time. Its only a bunch of screws really! Easier than the BM dashboards. They are fun! (slight hint of sarcasm) Was a nice sunny day so i was quite happy!
