I have just had the brakes fail on my A6 1.9tdi SE Avant (2001 new model).
Iam told by the main dealer that it was caused by water building up in the scuttle (where the battery is, I think), and not draining away. This water overflowed and caused the brake servo to rust, resulting in no brakes without any warning. Had already driven c 20 miles, and, luckily, they failed when I was parking!
Early warning signs were damp footwell, interior windows misting when starting engine (aircon), and some 5 weeks earler, the brakes came on of their own accord when starting and moving at slow speed (<5mph).
The local Audi dealer now routinely puches out the drain plug when these cars come in to stop the same thing happening in future.
Does anyone know if this is an Audi instruction, or just good thinking by the local technicians?
If you have any of these symptoms, please get your brake system checked before there is a fatality or serious injury!
