Not too sure about your wheels. However, I am running 245/45/18's on my TT. The current tyres are Conti Sport 2's and I reckon they offer a really good balance between cost/Dry and wet grip/aquaplaining/wear rate. Only downside is they are a bit noisey compared to others (except Bridgstones of course)

I expect most people would say the Michelins PS2's are better, but they are more expensive too!

225 tyres on 17 or 18 inch wheels MAY cause rubbing on lock and is even more likely if you lower the car. This depends on the car, some rub, some don’t. If it does, VW offer a special reduced lock rack to prevent rubbing.

realy don,t want to start changing racks for the sake of larger wheels what size would be max to avoid rack change thanks mark

The widest tyre that you can use that will give absolutely no risk of rubbing is a 205. I fitted 225/40 17's to my Octavia (same platform as a Golf 4) and it is fine and most cars do not rub on 225, just not all.

In my previous post I said I had fitted 225/40 17’s, that is wrong, they are 225/45 17’s. Whether you fit 17’s or 18’s, if you use a 225 section they MAY rub but 18’s look the best by far.
