Just sold my 2004 Symphony II for £100 and bought a new 2007 Concert for £70 (off eBay) - mainly for the MP3 playing ability. Had to buy an adapter cable (£45) to convert the old ISO system to the new RNS-E connecter for the new stereo. Arrived in the post today, plugged it in...nothing at all! Any idea what the problem could be? Live and earth appear to be in the right place - could I have blown a fuse? Is the most likely culprit the adapter cable? Why is there no instruction in the book about entering the code (which I have)?

Each radio should have a pinout description sticker on it, check that your new adapter is keeping all the connections the same. Its not unheard of for these adapters to be wired wrongly.

Code's arent mentioned in the book as they arent usually needed as the radio will recognise its original donor car. Its simple to enter the code though using the radio buttons.

Thanks, I will upload a few photos... I checked the 12V and earth and they are correct so I would have thought there would be some kind of signs of life??

If you def have the 12v and earth connected and the fuses are intact then you should indeed see some sign of lifee from it!

Yes, although car audio electronic have got more complex the basic 12v and earth thing remains. I definitely have 12v and earth upto the unit but no sign of life ignition on or off when I press the power button. I bought it off eBAy from a guy with a lot of 100% feedback - says it was removed before the vehical was sold so new... The fuse is fine - never seen a totally non reactive stereo - does it require other connections to activate it? My system is Bose but that just effects the output?

Below is the setup I have - straight forwards? Any way of testing the unit itself?

You def have 12v from the car? checked with a multi-meter?

Definitely have 12v and earth checked several times with a multimeter - and they do go to the right place on the new head unit. Is there another connection which could prevent it powering up - on some cars there is an additional ignition supply but I can't see it here?

double check the single din to double din connection wiring,i have found them to be incorrect but the 30 and 31 are normally ok
check the can high and low positions and try to interogate the radio via vag com over canbus

So the best way to check the connections is to copy the connection diagram off the old Symphony II and compare it to the ones on the adapter cable and where they claim to go to? Sorry I'm not a big expert on this but I can follow wires...

yes check the can wires and the 30 and 31,also you can bench test the unit by applying 12 volt feed and earth as the radio is a consumer just like a bulb so it should at least light up

Connected a 12v supply and earth directly - nothing at all. Is there anything else which needs connecting or is this unit DOA?

I couldn't tell you about the Audi Concerts, but one of my friends used to have a unit (Non-Audi Aftermarket - Clarion I think) that would only switch itself on if it had an aerial plugged in. There was no obvious reason for this. He just connected it and it worked.

Logically, if all your pins are correct I would think maybe get VAGCOM to check it? If all else fails just see if you can get Audi to check the unit incase it's just a duff unit? Providing you ask them only to CHECK the unit then I'm sure you'd be able to find someone who wouldn't charge you for it. :)

If your 100% sure you ar supplying it with 12v and earth to the correct pins and it doesnt light up at all then its knackered sadly.

It doesn't look good for the unit but the guy assures me he removed it from his new A3 to exchange for a sat nav unit. He will refund me but I'd rather assume it works and find the fault (if that makes sense)?? Think I will see if it can be tested...

2 - Signal (rear right) to amplifier with bass loudspeaker -R44- in luggage compartment (left-side) / amplifier -R12-
3 - Signal earth to amplifier with bass loudspeaker -R44- in luggage compartment (left-side) / amplifier -R12-
4 - Signal (front left) to amplifier -R12- (only with BOSE)
5 - Signal (front right) to amplifier -R12- (only with BOSE)
6 - Switched positive to amplifier with bass loudspeaker -R44- in luggage compartment (left-side) / amplifier -R12-
7 - CAN Bus High (Infotainment)
10 - CD earth to CD changer -R41-
12 - CAN Bus Low (Infotainment)
13 - CD data input from CD changer -R41-

concert 2 +
D - Multi-pin connector, 8-pin, black (T8)
9 - CAN Bus High (Infotainment)
10 - CAN Bus Low (Infotainment)
11 - NF mute (low frequency) from pre-fitted components for mobile phone installation

14 - Anti-theft alarm earth (not used)
15 - Terminal 30
16 - Permanent live connected to PIN 15 (anti-theft alarm)

AGAIN ARE THE 30 AND 31 PINS CORRECT AND CAN HIGH AND LOW
GIVE PIN 15 AND 16 BATTERY VOLTAGE 12V AND PIN 12 BODY/BATTERY EARTH AND IT SHOULD WORK AND MAKE SURE THE 10 AMP RADIO FUSE IN THE DOUBLE DIN CONNECTION IS OK.ALSO CHECK PIN 13 IS SWITCHING LIVE OUTPUT TO SEE IF THE UNIT IS FUNCTIONING EEN THOUGH ITS NOT LIGHTING UP

Thanks a8tech - I will go though the connections thoroughly tomorrow. I can confirm that 12 and 15 are correct - the adapter is supplying 12V and earth to the right place on the Concert 2+. Pin 16 on the concert is not connected on the adapter - should this have a perminent 12v supply? The fuse is fine

So my conclusion is that a Symphony II is worth upgrading to a Concert II+ - great display, MP3 playing capability, looks better and made by Blaupunkt. With a Bose system the Bass does need to be turned down on the newer unit - unless you like a lot of Bass!
