04 Jetta questions about factory alarm

i have recently purchased a 04 jetta GLS and was wondering how to activate the car factory alarm.

it says in the manual that by pressing the lock door buttons it automaticly activates the car alarm, however when i go to try and set the alarm off, it doesnt do anything.... can anyone tell me how to activate it and set it or is there a setting or what? any help will be appreciated:aargh4:

lock the car on the fob, and then open the boot with the key.

That always sets the alarm off on my Bora.
