Has anyone with multitronic experienced anything unusual when selecting reverse? On several occasions I have heard a heavy "clunk" and felt a lurch backwards. At first I thought it was caused by the engine revs being too high but a definite wait for the engine to slow down to tickover still seems to occasionally prompt it. Maybe I'm just being too impatient with it and allow it more time to sort itself out.

do you remeber to put foot on brake when selecting ? - i know i used to forget to put foot on brake sometimes when going from drive to reverse when parking etc which would make it unhappy , but other than that never noticed problems with either mutitronic A6 or a DSG A3 i've had in past (in a manual at the moment till my mutitronic delivered in sept)

I thought I did, in fact I don't think you can move the selector lever without your foot on the brake. I wondered if it was something to do with the parking brake or hill hold.

Well, the car has been back to the dealers for the past 2 days and it appears that it is something that Audi know about. The dealer told me and its on the paperwork as "Check with Audi fault under investigation. No repair at the moment." I have been told to effectively watch this space by the dealer and to contact them in a couple of weeks if they haven't contacted me before then. I'm not sure if this applies to all multitronics or just 2.7's. I'll report back if I hear anything more.

thats a pain

i've always been very happy with the multitronic in the 2.7 tdi A6 (i was suprised how much i liked it - far prefer it to the DSG box i had in an A3 2.0 tdi)

though i think the one in the A4 has undergone some serious revisions to handle more torque etc maybe thats thrown up some niggles

if i have any similar problems with my car when i pick it up i shall post details (i'm also getting the 2.7 multi with milano leather)

hope they get you sorted eventually John

I'm having the same trouble with my 04 plate A4 1.9TDi (130) Multitronic, it is a very aggressive change to reverse which only began the other day and is very worrying, also it feels like the clutch is slipping when changing gear (this is unusual because since I have had this multitronic gearbox I haven't felt it change gear before). When cruising at a steady 50-60mph once the rev counter hits 1300 revs it jumps up a a bit to 1400 revs without accelerating but like the clutch is slipping a bit. I took it back to where I brought it to get it looked at and they told me to take it somewhere to get a diagnostic on the gearbox to check for the problem, could it be a gearbox or clutch problem, has anybody else had a problem of this nature and is it worth actually taking it to Audi to get done or will any garage have the facility to do this?

Hi, I am thinking of switching to an A4 and with the Multitronic box, why do you prefer it to the DSG please? I have a DSG Passat and I like it, cannot find a multitronic to test where I live...

I am getting a multitronic A5, as I preferred it over the manual I drove. It's such a nice gearbox and has very smooth transitions. Even smoother than the Lexus one which is supposed to be a class leader.

Admittedly I have no experience of a DSG box though.

I'll get my coat.

the multitronic is very smooth , really like the sensation of seamless power

found the dsg hesitant at times - seems to get confused not changing down when you put your foot down in a quite unpredictable manner

The latest update is that yesterday I selected reverse and there was an almighty clunk and the engine stalled. I have spoken to the dealer today who has decided to take the car in as soon as possible rather than wait for Audi to decide what they are going to do. Although I have to wait until early November as I need a courtesy car.

Yesteday was a bad day, catching the sill on a kerb as well as the gearbox playing up.

Having read about all the juddering problems thought I'd add in my recent experience and how I fixed it. I have an 04 2.5 tdi A4, multitronic, 70k. When car was accelerating there was severe juddering at around 1100 revs (20 - 30mph). Took it into audi dealer who charged £150 (!!) to tell me what the problem was - it needed the famous 7 part clutch upgrade and new input shaft, although there was nothing wrong with the input shaft. From other conversations, I understand they prefer to change the whole lot as they dont have the skills to just do the clutch upgrade. Quote was £2000. Even though i had the car from new, because the last 2 services were completed by a non audi dealer there was no goodwill contribution (even though it seems a really common fault Audi dont own up to it).

I saw Inde Tech audi specialists garage talked about on the forum and so had a word there. They did the clutch upgrade (no need for new input shaft) for £750 plus VAT, saving me over £1000. So far so good and no juddering.

Hope this summary of my experience helps.

My dilemna is now whether to sell the car (its behaving quite well now )- anyone know of multitronics that last over 100k miles or do they all tend to pack in before they reach this mileage?

Cheers
