Volkswagen has claimed three trophies at this year’s British Insurance Car Security Awards (BICSA), which are presented today (29 June) by Thatcham, the Motor Industry Repair Research Centre, in Berkshire.

The Touareg was, for the second consecutive year, the outright winner of the 4x4 category; the Phaeton 3.2-litre V6 and 6.0-litre W12 came second in the Luxury/Executive class; while the Touran came third in the Compact MPV category.

Vehicles were judged on a number of criteria identified by the creators of the New Vehicle Security Ratings (NVSR) scheme. Those that had a maximum five stars for ‘theft from’, had double locking and an ‘E’ insurance suffix (indicating they had a feature that exceeds the required standard) were shortlisted for final evaluation and ranking.

The awards are presented at a high-profile ceremony in Thatcham today, attended by representatives from the Home Office and leading figures from the motor industry.

Paul Willis, Director of Volkswagen Cars said: 'We are delighted that the Touareg has won its category for the second consecutive year in these important Thatcham awards. The Touareg is already recognised as being at the forefront of its class in many respects, so it's great news that its class-leading security features are also being highlighted.'

Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said: ‘I would urge both private motorists and those who buy cars for companies to take these awards into account when deciding which new car to buy.‘
