Oettinger Boot spoiler - fixing

Hey,

I recently purchased an Oettinger boot spoiler for my VW Bora, it happens to be in the same paintcode as my car and comes complete with mounting brackets.

The spoiler fits on by "Clamping" to each side of the boot lid, so there is no need to drill holes into the boot lid.

However where the spoiler contacts the bootlid i beleive there should be some form of sealant or anti vibration material - i dont know what to use, i thought of using a bonding agent but was worried that it might damage the paintwork if i ever wanted to remove it?

Can any one suggest a suitable material for this job? obviously i cant just mount the hard face of the spoiler to the bootlid, it needs some form of barrier.

the brackets under the lid,on the inside of the boot lid have a rubber pad on them,
although looking at the spoiler itself their doesn't seem to be anything between it and the boot lid.
i would however suggest you run a coat of transparent silicon sealer on the spoiler
before you clamp it on.
mine was on the car when i bought it,so can't tell you how it was installed originally.

mine was same as above when fitted at dealer, I have now glued it using bodywork glue as the clamps bend under vibration and the spoiler comes loose.

mine is a 2001,i have had it 21mths,and no sign of loosening at all.
it's solid!!

My first Bora had the same spoiler, and i agree it didnt look like there was any bonding used, however i went onto the oettinger website;

If you scroll down it says it is both clamped and bonded.

The spoiler i got came with the clamps and rubber pads, however there is no sealing/ adhesive that i can see.

Also the clamping bolts are missing! apparently the guy rounded the heads when removing them, so now i have to try and source some bolts!

I think it needs some sort of adehsive, but im worried about damaging paintwork if i ever wish to remove it, does that adhesive stuff damage paintwork or not?

Lol, only by fluke, i happened to be looking for a spoiler for a good year now, official quote from Oettinger was £350!!!! i managed to get this one in the right colour for less than half of that!

So assuming there is an adhesive used, what can you recommend? i have never used anythying before so do not know, lokking forward to getting it on, should look good with other mods.

not really sure myself,but perhaps the stuff they stick the badges on with?
it seems sturdy enough,and comes off no bother apparently.

Yes perhaps,

though i still dont know any brand names for that kind of thing, i did see some black adhesive stuff, but agree with you that clear would be better if possible.

First things first though, i need to take the spoiler to B&Q and find some suitable bolts!

I'd use double sided scotch tape myself for added security, but theres little point in trying to preserve the paint underneath as there will no doubt be some paint fade after a year or so on the rest of the car, I noticed when I removed my factory fitted non glued rear spoiler on my Honda Prelude a few years back.

It was obvious there had been a spoiler there and no amount of t-cutting on the rest of the car got the patches to blend in.

But that may be a Honda paint issue and VW may well fare better

HI,

wel the car is metallic black, so hopefully there will not be much paint fade, i think black is usually quite good at hiding that kind of thing?

I'm debating whether to get a proffessional body shop to fit it, i cant see why it would cost much, as i said it only needs clamping down + some sort of adhesive, at least if i got it done proffessionally there would be warranty on the inststallaion?
