VW 2.4 5 cylinder diesel problem - airlock starting

I have a VW camper, its a 1996 and has the above engine. It is often difficult to start and looking at the fuel filter and pipes you can see the disel run back to the tank and get replaced by air?

Does anyone know if the fule pump has a non-return value in it, or something else that might cause this promblem.

Hi If the small hoses between the injectors are leaking that would cause the problem.Your engine does not have seperate a fuel pump.You should clamp the fuel return from the injection pump,this will indicate (if it continues to draw in air) if there is a fault in the injection pump or not.

Are you sure the glowplugs are ok. This engine does like it's glowplugs, especially first start of the day.
