I was thinking of getting a cooler to put in the boot for picnics and longer drives and such. I was looking around amazon.com at ones that work from a car's 12v socket, which is handy since my Golf has one in the boot.
Does anyone have an experiences or recommendations with stuff like this?

You get what you pay for.

There are two types;

1, The most common and obviously cheaper use Peltier coils as a method of cooling. I've got one of these and it is ok but nothing to rave about.

2, A proper mini fridge. Much more money but far far better.

Whichever type you get don't forget that they will drain your battery if you leave the car sitting with the engine off and the cooler plugged in.

We bought one of these..... http://www.minicoolers.co.uk/index.htm?url=products/coolbags.htm its the blue one on the left in the link.

it can run on the 12v boot socket that we have in our golfs and it also has a mains plug so you can plug it in elsewhere.

its main selling point to me was that when not in use it can be packed flat unlike other cooler boxes.

The service was good too. i telephoned the order through as it was just before closing at 5.30pm and from what we can remember we got it next day. if we ordered it on a friday we got it monday. i will get some photos of it flat so you can see it, (when i can get to it that is.)

I was looking at this one lately: http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=92649

Doesn't sound bad for £50...

They are both Peltier coil boxes like mine.

They only reduce the temp by 15-20 degress below ambient. Great for a day out but no good as a long term cooler / fridge.

we have a camping gas one and are really please it can do cold or hot never tried the not though asume good for keeping takeaways warm - halfruds had theirs on offer last week when I was in.

we had a cheap one from woolies to start with but that wasn't very good you get what you pay for. Also have seen one somewhere that has a small freezer in it for ice etc which would be really great but cannot remember where
