Noisy AIRCON

I have a 99 lhd Beetle which we use as a holday car in France, THE AIRCON compressor has started making a rattling type of noise which stops when it is switched off. The unit still appears to chill if left running but I dont like the noise. Took it to the local VW garage who said it was not important. ANyone any knowledge of this?

Check the gas level as first point of repair, low gas levels can cause funny noises in the system, i've had droning noises, hissing noises and various other noises due to low gas - You should have 750g in the system - If thats all good then i would have thought the compressor is on it's way out - HTH

my sharan has done this since i bought it 5 years ago, it turned out to be the electro clutch just being noisy doesn't make any difference to the aircon i just put up with the noise. i can only hear it on tickover
