scirocco engine idles fast

Hi everyone, this is my second post here.
I own a 1990 1800 cc scirocco gtii carb.
currently having problems with car running too fast as if the auto choke is sticking. this is causing engine temp to rise and when car ignition is switched off and key removed engine judders and roughly runs for up to a minute.
any ideas?
someone suggested the wax stat? whatever that is.

point taken crasher. although previous prob was mainly the engine cutting out, now the bugger keeps running too much!:confused:
