my mate has upgraded his 19" a8 alloys to 20" s8,the back wheels look like they could come out further to fill the arches,is it ok to fit spacers and if so how wide is recomended

yes it will be fine to fit spacers. its all depending on how much space there is and how low the car is. get a tape measure out and have a look, then have a think where he would like the wheels to stick out to and if they would scrub. then chose an appropriate spacer.

i have 20mm (each side) so 40mm in total on the rear of my seat ibiza.
