Starter Motor

My starter motor started making a grinding noise after starting the car (bearings?) but it's suddenly stopped doing it (typically, just as I take the car in to be looked at).

Is this something that's quite common, and will it be OK? The garage say it seems fine. I'm paranoid about it exploding on me or something :)
