Had the lack of power problem a while back on my 95 Tdi Passat and after a load of searching on the net discovered a chap who suggested removing and cleaning the MAF.
There`s a lot of chat on here about replacing it and the expense involved so I gave it a go.I don`t think the problem is that they are failing,it`s that the sensor is clogging up with dirt.
On examining the unit I saw a thin copper filament that sits in the airflow so I popped off the gauze at the back of the MAF and cleaned it with cotton buds and brake cleaner,re-installed it and hey presto the power was back.
A lot cheaper than parts and labour prices,in fact it`s virtually free.

Nice fix. I wish everything was that simple!
