16inch wont really be the way to go as not many tyres are made wider than the standard 16inch size of 205/50VR-16 (6-6.5 inch wheel) the std VW GTI size on alloys to keep the gearing correct ( std GTI mk3 size mk4's had 205/55VR-16). but bearing in mind your 1.4 is lower geared than the more powerful cars and believe me if you over tyre it you'll notice a drastic loss of accleration.

you could always go with 235/45W-17 (7 inch wheel) if you dont mind a loss in accleration but watch the rear arches on mk3's as if its on std suspension it can due to the softer setup when laden cause the tyre to rub in the arch. this is not a problem on GTI's and modified cars due to better damping and control on overhaul movement.

always bear in mind to ask the supplier by what per cent is the rolling radius of any conversation +/- ideal is within 5%

Theres plenty of wide 16inch tyres available! dunlop and toyo both do 235/50/16's so you could go 16x7.5 or even 16x8 on the rims

ps your rolling diameter will be larger with these sizes so you may need to adjust your speedo
